There is something very powerful about creating content for your audience isn’t there? It’s often the place where you realise that what you are teaching and what you yourself are doing are two different things, and all becomes clear as to why things aren’t, or haven’t been, working.
So here’s my brutally honest share with you about how this relates to me and my business. I’m not going to wax lyrical about how it’s taken all my courage to share this with you, because it hasn’t taken any courage whatsoever! The truth is that I’m sharing this with you because to me it’s almost like the proverbial elephant in the room, and I think it will not only be hugely clarifying for you, but also, there’s a few invaluable lessons in here for you that I think every business owner should know.
Let’s just say this is well worth 5 minutes of your time, especially if your business is not where you want it to be right now.
So here’s the deal.
Back in 2007 when I launched TheRawFoodCoach.com I (somehow) managed to get just about everything right. While I wasn’t a newbie in business and had made lots of rookie errors with my previous company, with TRFC I managed to grow a huge list, create record-breaking launches including six-figure months, and became an industry leader, all in a very short space of time.
And then, a few years later, I diversified.
You see, like many entrepreneurs and business owners, I am multi-passionate. And I discovered, after almost twenty years of talking, teaching and writing about raw food, that I really really wanted to start talking more about LIFE and BUSINESS, and to share the things that I had discovered along my own journey that I knew would help and inspire others who wanted to create their very best life and business, too.
And that’s when things started to get funky.
It wasn’t that what I had to say or share was any less valuable or credible or of a lower standard than anything I had ever had to share about raw food.
However, where I went wrong – and this is my brutal share – is that I ended up totally confusing my audience. And in a fairly short space of time, not only did they not know who or what I was a stand for anymore, but pretty much nor did I!
Can you relate?
As soon as this became obvious to me, it was almost too late. The “damage” was already done. So now what was I to do?
I didn’t want to go back to where I started because I was clear that I wanted to talk about raw food AND life AND business, and yet, here I was trying to talk about all three at once and struggling to find a way to keep all of the plates spinning while keeping in touch with my tribe and bringing value to them on a regular basis. It honestly felt like mission impossible.
Now you might be thinking, “Fair enough, I can see how that can happen. You started talking about more than one thing and so people started getting a little confused about whether you were The Raw Food Coach, or High Vibrational Woman, or what…” And this is true.
However, this is only part of it.
Not only was I talking about three topics instead of one, I was also doing many other things in a way that was complicated and confusing.
You see, the more strands that you add to your business overall – messages, marketing channels, offers, ideal client profiles… the more chaos, confusion and ultimately debilitation it brings.
And I did all of the above!
In short, I did everything the opposite of what had created my initial success.
It is not lost on me that the journey I have been on with my business, is the exact same journey that everyone goes on with their raw food diet!
It all starts so very simple – and by doing the right things, simply and clearly, you get great results. Then you learn about all these other things you can be doing, using, trying etc., and things get more complicated, more expensive, more confusing, more overwhelming, more chaotic, and the benefits decrease. So then you try something else, mix it up again, hoping that different things will bring different results. And yet still, confusion, chaos and overwhelm remain.
And then you finally get it!
Finally, perhaps after a number of years, you come out the other side, quite exhausted and war-torn, but essentially realising that the original plan was never broken – it just needed tweaking. And now you have the wisdom of experience to create an even more superior version of the one that made you want to go experimenting in the first place.
But you had to go through the middle to get to it.
So that’s where I am now. On the home stretch, and reaping the benefits of many hard-won lessons along the way.
Of course while these lessons are painful and on one level we’d rather not go through them, out the other side the sky is blue, the birds are singing and we know, for sure, we are never going back there again. Hallelujah!
If you’re new in business, trust me, as tempting as it will get, you’ll want to keep things as simple and easy as possible in every department. Stay in your lane, deliver excellent value, and learn from those who have already trod the boards, and you will create the success that you dream of.
If you’re in the middle phase, I feel your pain! Right now, you might be wondering how you can get out the other side as quickly as possible, because with your own experiences and my sharing combined, you can now clearly see that without radical action, the waters are just going to get more and more muddied, and things are only going to get more painful and challenging as a result.
So, do you want to know my secret for how to keep things simple (for success), or how to get out of the mud ASAP, and go to the next level?
I definitely would have answered “YES!” a couple of years ago when I was wondering if the mud would magically vanish at some point, or if I was just getting myself more and more into it.
So here’s the secret:
Get the foundations of your business DOWN and make them as simple, clear, strategic, and as well thought-out and aligned as possible. And then build from there.
Like, I say, keep it SIMPLE. But get it right!

So there you have it!
My painful lessons, my brutally honest share, and the silver lining is that I now know how to help you get YOUR business right, whether it be right from the start, or back on the right track!
And that, ultimately, is a wonderful thing, and something I wouldn’t have been able to do three years ago, because I hadn’t been through it myself. So not all bad 😉
