If you’re like many people around the world right now, you may well have found that the over last few weeks your diet has taken a rather negative hit – and you’re not liking it, at all.
Perhaps you’re feeling heavier, more depressed, bloated, lacking energy, inspiration and oomph. It’s easy to put these things down to the global situation that we find ourselves in, and of course for sure to some extent that is true, but deep down you probably know that if you cleaned up your diet right now, you’d be feeling a lot happier, healthier, clearer, cleaner and leaner than you currently do.
So what to do?
Well first of all, absolutely start with some self-compassion.
99% of people “fall off the wagon” multiple times during their raw food journey.
There’s many reasons for this, and we’ll go into a few of them in a moment, but the fact remains that just about everybody does it, there’s nothing wrong with you, and your next step comes down to whether you want to stay where you are or start feeling better as quickly as you can.
So if you know that you want to feel better NOW and you need some education, inspiration or motivation, then look no further. This extra-special article is for YOU!
Why people usually fall off the wagon
- Change in routine
- Health problems
- Loss of a friend or family member
- Relationship break-up
- Not getting enough support from partner, family and/or friends – or worse, objections
- Not seeing the results that they wanted to see
- Losing sight of the vision/goals that were created in the beginning
- Not having a big enough WHY
- Getting bored with food choices/lacking diversity
- Getting fed-up of food prep
- Finding it too expensive
While this list is definitely not exhaustive, you can see just from looking at it that right now, in the current pandemic situation we find ourselves in, a lot more of these boxes are going to be ticked than normal – meaning that the time we find ourselves in is a practically guaranteed recipe for dietary dive-bombing.
So once you’ve accepted that, actually, falling off the wagon at this time is way easier and potentially more inevitable than perhaps any other, hopefully you can find and give that compassion to yourself and accept that you are human, and what matters now is not where you’ve been, but where you go from here.
Before I get into the specifics of how you get back on the raw food wagon, I want to begin by saying that some people find this more easy than others. Largely this comes down to what your diet was like before, and also how long you’d been consistent in your habits.
As you can probably guess, the longer you’ve been eating clean and the more consistent you have been in doing so, the quicker you are likely to bounce back and reclaim a new normal.
I say a “new normal” because we’re not yet out of the woods. Many of us are still doing food shopping very differently to before, and if you are spending more time at home than before and/or you have your family around you more often than before, these two factors will also play a part in how you proceed from here.
And so, what worked before may not work right now. It all depends on your own unique set of circumstances and what you need to do – or start doing – that will enable you to create your own version of success in amongst your new and current reality.
When I felt my own eating habits taking a hit, and then heard the same from friends, clients and saw it rampant on social media, that’s when I knew it was time to look at why this was happening (beyond the obvious) and to create something extra-special and new for you.
And so while this article will absolutely help to get you out of the slump and back into positive movement, it’s just the start of what I have for you, and also, to be quite honest, it’s just the start of what you actually NEED.
As I said, everyone is different, but most people are going to the need the metaphorical jump leads applied in order to get back on the wagon and stay there!
And so, I’ve laid out a 6-part journey for you that will give you the outline of what you need to do, and then it’s for you to get clear on what you can do solo, and what you are going to need some moral support, guidance and cheerleading around.
Let’s dive into those 6 steps now:
Step 1) As already discussed, make peace with yourself and wherever you are at. Be compassionate. It’s no big deal. This too shall pass. Give yourself some TLC and some serious self-compassion and then decide if you’re ready to get back on the wagon yet. If yes, keep reading, if no, do what you need to do!
Step 2) Assuming you are ready to get back on the wagon, your next step is to get clear on some key things such as: What do you feel were the biggest contributing factors to eating differently? Why do you want to clean up your diet again? How much raw food do you want to eat and why? What do you need to do differently this time?
If you want some help and powerful structure around this, then come and join me on my free virtual workshop happening tomorrow, Wednesday 15th April. It’s happening at Noon Pacific/3pm Eastern/8pm UK and a recording will be available if you can’t make it live. If you’re not already a subscriber to my email list, or you missed this before, then you’ll need to opt-in to receive the workbook + recording. Just click here to take care of that now.
This workshop will make ALL of the difference as to whether you’re successful getting and staying back on the wagon – or not – and it’s never been shared before!
This is a resource that you will want to keep in your toolbox forever!
Step 3) Decide on your approach. Generally what works best for people is to either ease back into more raw food over the course of 3-7 days, or to simply bite-the-bullet and go straight into it. If you’ve taken the “Go Raw with Karen” program with me before then you already have the mini eBook that shows you step-by-step how to take either of these approaches. If you haven’t yet taken the “Go Raw with Karen” program, no worries! I’m gifting you instant access to the mini eBook here. Yes, it’s yours, right here, right now. (And if you are interested in joining the program, keep reading, it’s starting again on Monday 27th April.)
Step 4) Detox your kitchen. Absolutely one of the single best things you can do to make a fresh start is to do a thorough clean of your kitchen. Again, this might mean different things to different people. However, even if it’s just a complete clean out and disinfection of the fridge, I promise you will feel so much better and more in control immediately. Not only this, but it really does send a message to the rest of your family or household (and you!) that a line has been drawn in the sand and a new dietary path is ON! It’s way more powerful than a conversation (actions speak louder than words), and the feel-good-factor will last for days.
Want to detox your fridge live at the same time as other healthy eaters all around the world? This coming Saturday, 18th April I’m leading my first ExtRAWdinary Day since the first one I ran back in 2013! Yes that’s a 7 year gap! Don’t miss it! This is your opportunity to not only be part of a really fun kitchen-clean-up project (with TONS of inspiring before and after photos) but also to get clear on the exciting personal projects that are going to propel you and your diet forward. This day is not to be missed and it’s a super-sweet deal! Click here to read all about it. (Now passed, but stay tuned because we’ll be doing it again as it was SO much fun and successful!)
Step 5) Put your approach into action and see how you go. While I’m all for positivity and aiming high, more often than not we have to do a trial run of something in order to see if it actually works. For this reason I recommend that you give yourself a week after your fridge clean/kitchen detox to put everything you’ve decided upon to the test. Follow your menu plan, put new rules, boundaries and systems in place and see what comes up. This way you will know what’s working and what’s not and then you’ll be able to refine and hone out the other side for longer term success. Let’s face it: whatever happens, it’s likely only going to be an improvement on where you were before!
If you want a quick, easy and proven 1-week plan to follow, you’ll want to check out the first ever live run of “Go Raw For A Week” which starts this Sunday 19th April with a prep day. This gives you the opportunity to be part of an international 7-day challenge that is great for enthusiastic beginners or those who want to get back on the wagon quickly. I’m running it purposefully just for those of you who really need the daily inspiration, guidance and moral support. Check it out here. (Also now passed, but again stay tuned because we’ll be doing it again as this too was SO much fun and successful!)
Step 6) Recommit to the raw lifestyle. I’m honestly not so concerned about how much raw food you want to eat, just that you eat the amount that you want to and that you get the benefits and level of health and vitality that you want. For me I have learned over and over that I can coast along OK at 50/60% raw and look and feel healthier than the average bear, but when I move into the 95-100% zone, I’m in Super K mode (remember her?) And that’s when I remember why I do what I do and why I want to eat this way. I’m pretty sure you feel the same way. This is why it’s so important to get Step 2 right, as you want to be clear on where you are going and why before you even get started.
Once you are clear, and you do get off the starter blocks, then you have to truly commit to doing what you need to do in order to stay on track, or, unfortunately, you will inevitably end up back at Step 1.
If you know that you really don’t want to end up back there again, this is where “Go Raw with Karen” comes in. If you’ve never taken this program before, as mentioned, we start again on Monday 27th April. and doors are NOW OPEN!
(And they close at midnight Eastern on Monday 4th May 2020, so best get a wriggle on if you’ve not already joined us!)
There you have it, your 6-point plan.
Makes sense, non?
Can it be easy? YES.
Will it be easy?
My honest answer is “Not without the right information, guidance and support.”
Am I biased?
Absolutely, but not for the reasons you might be thinking! I’m biased because I personally yo-yo’d with my raw food diet for 5 whole years before I figured ANY of this stuff out. Most of those five years were very unconscious. I didn’t understand why I fell off the wagon. I didn’t know how to get back on. I didn’t understand it was and is a process. I didn’t know that self-compassion was even a thing!
And that’s why I became a Raw Food Coach (in fact, the first ever Raw Food Coach!), because I had no choice but to figure this stuff out if I wanted to go raw, stay raw and actually be happy and consistent in both my diet and my performance as a human being.
So yes, I’m extremely biased!
And I’ve coached enough people over the past 22 years (literally thousands) to know that I am not alone in this desire.
And so this is why I’ve put specific pieces in place to help you and others like us who WANT to eat raw and want to STAY raw, and want to LIVE the life that eating raw enables. It’s that simple!
